Stakeholder Consultations on Proposed Legislative Reform

The Social Security Board (SSB) is continuing its journey to modernize Belize’s social security system to ensure it remains fair, responsive, and sustainable for generations to come.

Earlier this year, the SSB launched its first round of stakeholder consultations to discuss three proposed legislative reforms: transitioning from a wage-based contribution system to a percentage-based contribution system, increasing the contribution floor to $130, and revisiting the contribution split between employees and employers. The valuable feedback received from citizens and stakeholders across the country has helped shape the next phase of discussions.

We are now moving into the second round of consultations, taking place from September to November 2026, where we will present seven proposed reforms grouped under four key areas:

• Contribution Model
• Determining Pension Benefits
• Pension Adjustments
• Automatic Triggers and Provisions

As part of our commitment to transparency, accountability, and meaningful public engagement, the SSB will be hosting consultation sessions in communities across Belize. These sessions provide an opportunity for insured persons, employers, pensioners, and members of the public to learn more about the proposals, ask questions, and share their perspectives.
